Error starting ubuntu, No init after making a do-release-upgrade from 14.04 to 16.04 (kernel panic) + many unfulfilled dependencies

0

I have a desktop MSI PC that had Ubuntu 14.04, and I did a do-release-upgrade to go up to 16.04. The process lasted for a while, but ended with a window with error. Thinking that it could be fixed after a reboot.

The strange thing is that he did not let me restart or manually (with the mouse on the top right, I did not do anything) or by command line when doing sudo reboot told me that the command did not exist ... So I decided to do a reset by pressing the power button.

The problem is that when booting again, I get a panic kernel, very similar to what happened to a user who reported in link

run-init: /sbin/init: No such file or directory
Target filesystem doesn't have requested /sbin/init.
run-init: /sbin/init: No such file or directory
run-init: /etc/init: Permission denied
run-init: /bin/init: No such file or directory
/bin/sh: 0: Can't open splash Kernel panic — not syncing: Attempted to kill init! exitcode=0x00007f00

Following the same instructions described there, I downloaded the latest version of ubuntu 16.04, to mount it on a USB and try to fix from a live version of ubuntu.

The instructions were as follows

  • boot your droplet with a Recovery ISO - Like TigerShark from DigitalOcean
  • Network must be configured, either manually or via TigerShark script.
  • $ mount / dev / sda1 / mnt
  • $ chroot / mnt
  • $ unlink /etc/resolv.conf & & amp; echo "nameserver 8.8.8.8" > /etc/resolv.conf
  • $ apt-get install init ** from here I could not follow, explain below **
  • $ update-initramfs -u
  • I managed to access the disk, to continue with the process of installing packages, since apparently the upgrade was inconclusive, and the correct or necessary packages were not installed ....

Then once mounted, and executed the chroot, I try to do what ubuntu everywhere and pages recommend, do a apt-get update & amp; apt-get upgrade & amp; apt-get -f install

But they can not complete the instructions, and I always throw away errors of unfulfilled dependencies, in some places they recommend uninstalling the packages that have conflicts, but in all cases I saw that they were few packages and it was easy to uninstall them. Not so my case, and although it only throws me 64 packages with errors I can not understand which one I should eliminate to fix the upgrade.

I mention the errors that I get when executing the recommended commands to solve the problem:

apt-get update - > does not throw errors

apt-get upgrade - > E: Error, pkgProblemResolver :: Resolved generated breaks, this may be caused by held packages. E: Unable to correct dependencies

    root@ubuntu:/etc/apt# sudo apt-get upgrade -f

    LOGS:

I put the main logs that I recommend to review

    • /etc/apt/source.list - > link
    • /var/log/dpkg.log - > I will paste it in pastebin, since it is very long, link
    • /var/log/dist-upgrade/main.log - > link

Please, if someone can guide me to solve this problem, with the live USB-boot I could install it in a new partition, but the idea is not that ... I know it can be fixed, but I am half-entangled with the packages that I should be able to eliminate.

As you say the upgrade was not completed correctly, I would recommend restarting it from the live cd.

You start with the live cd of ubuntu 16.04 and proceed as if you were going to perform a clean installation.

To not slow down the process, do not choose to download the updates, give it a following and choose the option that says "upgrade ubuntu" and you will install it; remember to use the same user and the same password that you used in the previous version.

You wait for the restart to complete and everything should work correctly.

    Greetings.
