Add SSL Certificate from a domain to a subdomain

I have a main domain (domain.cl) in which I installed the Letsencrypt tool to generate an SSL certificate for that domain. Later I added a subdomain (sub.domain.cl) and when I opened it in the browser, it tells me that the site is not safe. My question is, how secure is that subdomain, having a certificate already installed in the main domain?

Since they are different sites it makes sense that each site has its own certificate, so you could not share it.

Since they are free, you only have to request one for each of your domains and subdomains .

Or wait until January 2018 which is when Let's Encrypt will start issue certificates with wildcard .
